Bluferries Launches Italy’s First Hybrid Ro-Ro Passenger Ferry
The first hybrid Ro-Ro passenger ferry in Italy
A significant step forward in maritime sustainability. Today, Bluferries, a company of the FS Group’s Polo Logistica, launched the Sikania II, Italy’s first hybrid Ro-Ro passenger ferry, which will serve the route between Villa San Giovanni and Messina.
The new vessel, which represents an investment of 26 million euros, features an advanced hybrid propulsion system that will reduce CO₂ emissions by 50% and eliminate emissions at the port during arrival and departure maneuvers. The energy management system will allow the batteries to be charged during navigation, and the vessel will use fully electric propulsion during port operations.
The Sikania II will join the five other vessels already operating in the Strait of Messina and will undergo testing in the coming months, with the goal of entering service at the beginning of 2025. Additionally, the onboard solar panels will provide energy to power the vessel’s accommodation services.
“With the launch of the Sikania II, Bluferries takes a major step toward sustainability and innovation,” said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. “The vessel will significantly contribute to emission reductions and serves as an important example of how technology can enhance the efficiency and environmental impact of maritime transport.”
Giuseppe Sciumè, CEO of Bluferries, added: “With the Sikania II, we continue to lead the way in maritime innovation. This ferry is just the first of a series of projects aimed at expanding our hybrid fleet and improving connectivity between Sicily’s main hubs.”
