First Traxx Universal DC Locomotive with Last Mile Technology Delivered by Alstom
Alstom Awarded €323 Million Contract for 70 New Locomotives
- Awarded to Alstom a contract worth over 323 million euros for 70 new locomotives
- 20 new Traxx Universal DC locomotives, produced at Alstom’s Vado Ligure (SV) facility, will be delivered during the year
- The "Ultimo Miglio" technology allows the train to connect even in non-electrified areas
Vado Ligure, 6 May 2024 – Today, the first Traxx Universal DC locomotive equipped with the Last Mile technology was delivered at Alstom’s Vado Ligure facility. This innovative system allows the train to connect to non-electrified areas without the need for shunting locomotives. During the event, the FS Group Logistics Hub announced that Alstom has won a €323 million contract for the supply of 70 new locomotives (both with Last Mile and fully electric) along with a 12-year maintenance service, with an option for an additional 30 locomotives.
The event was attended by Edoardo Rixi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Giacomo Raul Giampedrone, Regional Minister for Public Works, Infrastructure, and Roadways of Liguria, and several representatives from Mercitalia Logistics and Alstom, including Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, and Michele Viale, CEO of Alstom Italia.
“To have a modern infrastructure system, Europe must rethink the decisions it made over the past 30 years,” said Edoardo Rixi. “We are investing over €200 billion in railways over the next 12 years. This is a real infrastructure revolution.”
Sabrina De Filippis added, “Today’s delivery marks a key step in our logistics sector relaunch. The new locomotives with Last Mile technology are a tangible result of our investments to improve rail transport, making it more sustainable and efficient.”
Michele Viale commented, “The delivery of this locomotive represents a major milestone in our long-standing partnership with the Logistics Hub. Our Vado Ligure facility is a center of excellence in the design and production of locomotives, with over 2700 Traxx locomotives sold across Europe.”
The Traxx Universal DC locomotive, designed for freight transport, is characterized by its excellent energy efficiency and high traction capacity. Its ability to adapt to new contexts and operational needs makes it an advanced solution for rail transport.
The event marks a significant step for the FS Logistix, which continues to renew its fleet of locomotives to ensure increasingly efficient, sustainable services, integrated with other transport modes such as sea and road transport.
The Alstom site in Vado Ligure, with over 300 employees and covering 63,000 square meters, is an excellence center for the design and production of railway vehicles and has been involved in all stages of production, from design to maintenance, for over a century.
