FS Logistix - SITO: two MoUs signed for the intermodal development of North-West Italy

FS Logistix and SITO signed two Memoranda of Understanding to develop North-western Italy’s logistics, strengthening their collaboration at the Freight Terminal, and outlining a path for European growth based on inter-modal transport and related services.

The agreements were announced today at the Torino Orbassano Terminal, during the Open Hub event, promoted by FS Logistix and SITO. The event featured panels between major companies and local institutions, focusing on the role of logistics as a strategic lever to boost the competitiveness of businesses in the North-West part of the country.

The first MoU, signed by FS Logistix, Interporto di Torino and Sito Logistica, launches a joint programme to develop intermodal and conventional traffic and services at the Torino Orbassano Railway Yard. Purpose of the agreement is providing Terminal-to-Terminal and End-to-End solutions, and to strengthen commercial initiatives with industrial customers and supply chain operators. The second agreement, between Terminali Italia (FS Logistix) and Sito Logistica, focuses on the transformation of the Torino Orbassano area into a competitive intermodal hub at both national and European level. Moreover, it outlines the phases to reach a Network Contract for managing the intermodal terminals jointly, also in anticipation of the new North-western infrastructure completion.

“These agreements reiterate the role of Torino Orbassano as a strategic logistics gateway, supporting the area’s industrial fabric - said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix. Here, rail, road, and integrated logistics converge, benefiting from direct access to national and European TEN-T network corridors. This strengthens the connections to Europe and enhances the ability of local supply chains to compete in those markets. Being here means providing businesses with a fast, competitive, and integrated access to the continent’s main outlets. Orbassano’s strategic importance does not lie only in its geographical position or infrastructure, it also focuses on its industrial ecosystem.”

“FS Logistix and Sito are joining forces to offer the best intermodal services out there, with 2033 - when the new, cutting-edge North-Western transport infrastructure will be completed - in mind - added Enzo Pompilio D'Alicandro, Vice President of SITO and CEO of Sito Logistica.  - The agreement signed today sparks an instant collaboration between the terminals in the Turin area, transforming them into a competitive intermodal hub for national and European freight transport. The hub will feature 12 operational tracks, over 275,000 square metres of yards, approximately 10,000 warehouses with internal tracks, and more than 50 direct employees, with the latest equipment and loading vehicles available.”

These Memoranda represent a significant step forward for Piedmont and the entire logistics system of North-western Italy - concluded Enrico Bussalino, Regional Councillor for Strategic Infrastructure and Logistics. - Orbassano remains a strategic hub within the regional and national intermodal network, fully in line with the Region’s efforts to strengthen rail, port, and hinterland connections. By investing in intermodality, we can reduce road traffic, cut down on emissions and make our companies more competitive on international markets. Collaboration between major industrial players and institutions is the key to building a modern, integrated and Europe-oriented logistics ecosystem.”

The Orbassano Terminal is a pivotal logistics platform for the North-West, and its ecosystem includes a railway yard, a freight terminal, and diversified areas (intermodal, conventional, and specialized units). It is driven by a sustainable nature (modal shift from road to rail, reduced emissions, and energy efficiency) and it manages complex supply chains. This strategic hub spreads over 3,000,000 m² of freight terminal area, with 80 operators on site and over 3,000 workers employed.

In addition, FS Logistix is massively present in north-western regions, with over 13 million tonnes transported and more than 22,000 commercial trains, representing more than 40% of the total trains.

The event was also an opportunity to bring together institutions and companies, share best practices and concrete actions to strengthen the logistics system of the country's most productive area, and turn it into a competitive logistics hub, based on intermodality and increasingly international connections.

After the welcoming speeches by Donato Liguori, General Director for Ports, Logistics and Intermodality MIT, Massimiliano Cipolletta, President of the Turin Chamber of Commerce, Giovanni Battista Quirico, President of SITO, and Franco Fenoglio, FS Group Board Member, the programme was divided into two insightful panels. The first round table, focused on “Business solutions”, was presented by Stefano Frisoni (FS Logistix Commercial Director) and leading industry spokespersons, such as Francesco Speziali (Calme Group), Gualtiero Rivoira (Acqua Eva Fonti Alta Valle Po) and Alberta Pasquero (Confindustria Piemonte). The second round table, focused on “Business development strategies”, featured Sabrina De Filippis (FS Logistix CEO), Enzo Pompilio D'Alicandro (SITO Vice President and Sito Logistica CEO), Francesco Zambon (Chairman of Finpiemonte Partecipazioni) and Paolo Montanari (Logtainer CEO). After the MoU was signed, the morning session was closed by the Enrico Bussalino - Councillor for Strategic Infrastructures and Logistics of the Piedmont Region - final speech.

After the institutional portion, the event went on with networking and B2B meetings reserved to companies, with FS Logistix Sales Team facilitating an operational comparison between companies' needs and available logistics solutions.
