FS Logistix and PJM: agreement Signed for the Digitalization of 600 Intermodal Wagons

Mercitalia Intermodal, a company of the FS Group's FS Logistix, has signed an agreement with PJM to enhance the fleet with new smart train technologies. Approximately 600 intermodal wagons will be equipped with PJM's WaggonTracker digital system, improving efficiency and maintenance management from 2025 to 2027.

In addition to general monitoring of the wagons, the system offers advanced functionalities, including real-time control of the braking system, load stability, train composition, and derailment detection. A local radio system aboard the train ensures immediate communication between the wagons and the train crew. Data transmission occurs through a secure and encrypted connection, supported by open interfaces.

The WaggonTracker system is fully compatible with future DAC (digital and automatic coupling of wagons) systems and can be integrated with customized applications, thanks to a high-power supply. Its innovation has been recognized with numerous awards, including the State Prize for Digitalization.

The smart train functionalities offer significant improvements across multiple areas: they reduce train preparation times, optimize asset management and maintenance through predictive strategies, increase reliability, and simplify vehicle usage. Additionally, they minimize downtime for costly repairs, contributing to lower operational costs and improved safety for the entire system.

Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, stated: "Innovation and digitalization are two of the key factors in our strategic plan for 2025-2029, which includes investments dedicated to digitalization, thanks to innovative projects like the smart train. We are constantly committed to adopting cutting-edge technologies to significantly reduce the environmental impact of logistics operations while ensuring high-quality service. The smart train is one of the projects that will allow Mercitalia Logistics to become a key player in European logistics processes, contributing to the evolution of global logistics."

“Rail logistics companies are facing an extremely difficult economic context. Digital and automated freight trains provide the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, availability, and predictability required. With the smart train functions, wagon owners are already benefiting from multiple advantages and are also perfectly equipped for future technologies like DAC," said Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJ Monitoring. "Forward-thinking companies like Mercitalia Intermodal are promoting innovation and technological developments, thus increasing the competitiveness of environmentally-friendly rail freight transport."
