New Dual Power Shunting Locomotives
- Two Dual Shunter 2000 locomotives produced by the Czech company CZ Loko
- The first shunting locomotives in Italy with dual diesel and electric power
- They will be used by Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal at the Port of La Spezia
Berlin, 25 September 2024 – Presented today at the Innotrans Fair in Berlin, the first Dual Shunter 2000 shunting locomotives of the FS Group’s Logistics Division. The two green Dual Shunter 2000 locomotives, produced by the Czech company CZ Loko, are the first in Italy to feature dual diesel and electric power and will be used by Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal at the Port of La Spezia. The investment for both vehicles amounts to €5.5 million.
The presentation event was attended by Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, Livio Ravera, CEO of Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, Josef Gulyas, Vice President and Managing Director of CZ Loko, and Josef Barta, President and majority shareholder of CZ Loko.
This represents another important milestone in the fleet renewal plan of the FS Group’s Logistics Division, which aims to offer increasingly efficient and sustainable services through asset enhancement, with a focus on integrating freight transport.
The Dual Shunter 2000 locomotive is designed for shunting services within terminals and ports. Thanks to its dual power, it can perform shunting operations in diesel mode (where the line is not electrified) and then continue as an electric locomotive on the main line to the hinterland.
On the operational and process productivity front, the dual power concentrated in a single vehicle reduces the number of locomotives required and allows the diesel system to be used on electrified lines, offering clear environmental benefits.
In terms of sustainability, the use of the Dual Shunter 2000 locomotives, compared to traditional locomotives, allows for a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 90% with HVO diesel power and up to 100% in electric mode.
The locomotive is equipped with a diesel engine with a maximum power of 895 kW, while the pantograph powers the four electric motors with 2200 kW. During service on electrified lines, it is possible to use energy recovery during braking.
The Logistics Division plans to acquire additional locomotives for the Port of Ravenna and the Padua Interport.
