Polo Logistica, new freight transport service from Sicily with 6 trains per week to Northern Europe
A new freight transport service has been launched by Polo Logistica (FS Italiane Group) connecting two terminals in Southern Italy: the Marcianise terminal and the Catania Bicocca terminal. This route serves an increasing volume of goods, such as industrial products, groupage, food & beverage, and chemicals. The connection through the Campania terminal allows for the transport of goods to and from Sicily through terminals in Milan Smistamento, Torino Orbassano, Busto Arsizio, and Bologna Interporto, completing the national and international intermodal network of Polo Logistica, linking Sicily with Northern Italy and Europe.
The service will begin operations on January 16, with an initial commitment of 6 weekly round trips. The trains (with a transport capacity of 1,100 tons and a length of 415 meters) consist of 22 platforms suitable for transporting swap bodies, containers, tank containers, and silo containers.
A real team effort between the companies of Polo Logistica made this new service possible. The Catania Marcianise freight traffic is designed by Mercitalia Intermodal in collaboration with Mercitalia Rail, which provides traction and shunting services, and is realized with the support of Mercitalia Shunting and Terminal for the unloading and loading of trains and shunting operations at the Marcianise terminal, where the convoys will be assembled, and of Terminali Italia, a company of the RFI Group, for loading and unloading activities at the Catania Bicocca terminal.
This new service further consolidates the synergies between the different companies of Polo Logistica, confirming its strategy of positioning itself on the market as the single interface for advanced rail logistics.
