Polo Logistica: 40 new locomotives for Intermodal and International Freight Transport and 115 Wagons
The FS Group continues its commitment to renewing its fleet dedicated to freight transport. During the Transport Logistic fair, held in Munich from May 9th to 12th, a purchase agreement was signed for 40 interoperable Siemens locomotives with the option of an additional 25. The agreement was signed between TX Logistik, a company controlled by Mercitalia Logistics and dedicated to international transport, and Siemens.
Luigi Ferraris, CEO of the FS Group, Carlo Palasciano, Chief International Officer of the FS Group, Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, and Michel Peter, CEO of Siemens, along with Steffen Bobsien, Vice President of Locomotives and Passenger Section, were present at the signing.
“The FS Group strongly believes in the development of logistics and freight transport. One of the key development pillars for this sector is improving operational efficiency and increasing market presence across Europe. Initiatives like this provide greater support to ‘Made in Italy,’ giving Italian companies already in the FS Logistix portfolio more opportunities to reach the German market and all other markets where TXL is present. In our Industrial Plan, we aim to double the share of freight transported by rail by 2030, which is a duty if we don't want European roads to be congested with commercial vehicles in the next 10 years. We have a very old freight fleet, but 80% of investments for FS Logistix are dedicated to renewing the fleet through the purchase of 400 new locomotives and 3,600 new wagons, which will reduce the average age of rolling stock from the current 30 years to 7 years.”
The locomotives will be built at the Siemens Mobility facility in Munich-Allach and will be used for freight transport along the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. The locomotives are ordered with different country packages. Twenty Vectron locomotives will be equipped for the German-Austrian-Italian corridor, and twenty will operate in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and the Netherlands. The new vehicles consume 25% less energy and are capable of carrying 30% more freight tonnage.
The total order volume, including the 25 optional locomotives, is approximately 300 million euros.
The first locomotives will be delivered to the German company TX Logistik starting in September 2024, with the final models expected to be delivered by December 2025. Siemens Mobility has also been entrusted with the maintenance of the locomotives under a full-service contract.
In order to further enhance international transport and support import-export activities between Italy and Europe, TX Logistik will also benefit from an additional 115 double-pocket T3000 wagons for intermodal transport. The first deliveries are expected by the end of this summer.
The modern pocket wagons are produced by Slovak manufacturer Tatravagonka. The model is particularly suitable for the TX NiKRASA transshipment system, which allows even non-craneable semitrailers to be easily loaded onto the rail. The recently introduced version 3.0 no longer requires terminal ramps, is stackable, and has been further optimized for the rail transport of mega-trailers.
Strengthening TX’s fleet will expand the export capacity of Italian companies to central and northern Europe with a more efficient and flexible fleet, equipped with Smart tools that enable our companies to access new services.
