FS Logistix: connections to trasport Rome's new metros in "all-train" mode begin

- 23 trains transferred by rail from Reggio Calabria directly to ATAC depots in Rome
- produced by Hitachi Rail, will be used for the Capital's B line
Rome, 10 April 2025 - Mercitalia Rail, a company in the FS Group's Polo Logistica, has started the ‘all-train’ transport connections for the new vehicles destined for the Rome Metro. The first convoy has arrived at its destination in the capital.
The trains are produced by Hitachi Rail in its Reggio Calabria factory and will be used by ATAC for the capital's B lines.
The trains from the capital of Calabria reach the ATAC depot at Magliana Nord directly by rail, using RFI's national infrastructure as far as Roma Ostiense, from where they join the Roma-Lido line operated by ASTRAL. This mode makes it possible to avoid the use of trucks for last-mile transport, eliminating the circulation of 138 heavy vehicles on the streets of the capital and making it possible not to have to break down and reassemble the metro.
‘We are proud to renew our collaboration with such an important player as Hitachi Rail for the transport of its Metros in the main Italian cities,’ said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. ‘Thanks to the great synergy with all the players involved, we were able to put in place a door-to-door transport mode entirely on rail that reduces emissions and avoids the circulation of trucks in the urban sections of the capital. An efficient, innovative and sustainable management to reduce the environmental and social impact on Romans and the many tourists who will visit the capital in this Jubilee year’.
The order involves more than 20 trips from the capital to transfer as many trains, with a CO2 saving of 215 tonnes compared to transport by truck. Each transported convoy consists of six boxes and two shield wagons, has a length of about 134 metres and a weight of about 210 tonnes.
The services are part of a tender awarded by Hitachi Rail to Mercitalia Rail in recent months, which consolidates its leadership in the field of exceptional and special rail transport.
