Polo Logistica and Marcegaglia join forces for new terminals and railway connections
- Agreement signed for new terminals and railway connections in the industrial area of Mantua and to strengthen rail transport of steel products entering and leaving Marcegaglia Group's plants
Rome, 21 March 2024 - Mercitalia Logistics, the lead company of the FS Group's Logistics Hub, and Marcegaglia Carbon Steel, the "core" of the homonymous steel group from Mantua, have signed an agreement for the design and construction of new terminals and railway connections and for the management of a new wagon fleet capable of meeting the Group's broader transport needs.
The partnership also includes new logistics solutions for the rail transport of steel products entering and leaving Marcegaglia plants. Specifically, the project will allow for the construction of a new railway connection of approximately 11 km between Castellucchio station and the Marcegaglia plant in Gazoldo degli Ippoliti, in the province of Mantua. This will be followed by the construction of a new railway terminal serving the industrial area of the municipalities of Gazoldo degli Ippoliti and Rodigo. "The agreement with the Marcegaglia Group confirms our commitment to guaranteeing increasingly tailor-made services for our customers and partners, also through multi-year and structured projects that can bring added value to the entire logistics chain – stated Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics – Our plan continues with a new partnership that has strategic value both for economic development and environmental sustainability with great attention to the territory". "With this agreement, we lay the concrete foundations for the construction of an important infrastructure not only for our company, but especially for the Mantua area. We appreciate the regional and local institutions, and the FS Polo Logistica for the work we have done together – emphasized Antonio and Emma Marcegaglia, at the helm of the Group of the same name – The new transport mode will integrate the solutions we already use today for flows in the territory and is necessary for the growth prospects, primarily, of the Gazoldo degli Ippoliti plant. Furthermore, it moves in the direction of greater environmental sustainability, a theme to which we have always been very attentive".
The infrastructure project will increase the use of rail transport, allowing for a reduction in truck traffic on the roads of the province of Mantua. With a dual objective: environmental sustainability, because it will effectively contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances emitted into the atmosphere by road transport vehicles; and greater road safety, because a single train removes 30 trucks from the road, ensuring safer conditions for freight transport, but also for all those who use cars for their travel.
