Pomezia Terminal, a Strategic Hub for Intermodal Freight Traffic
The FS Group has launched a working table to plan the works that will involve the Pomezia Santa Palomba freight terminal in the coming years, which, thanks to the commitment of Polo Logistica of FS, will be strengthened to become a real mobility hub, strategic for the growth of freight transport by rail.
“The future strategic hub of Rome and Lazio will represent a perfect and synergic crossroads of import and export for intermodal transport: on the one hand the hinge between the production areas of the north and the consumer markets of the south and the islands, and on the other the springboard for the aspirations of expansion of the industrial fabric of Lazio towards the markets of Middle Europe”, revealed Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, leader of Polo Logistica of the FS Group.
And it is precisely the role that the Pomezia hub is called to play at an international level that was at the center of the speech by Carlo Palasciano, President of Mercitalia Logistics, who underlined how "in Lazio the Scandinavian - Mediterranean corridor involves 440 km of railways and 270 km of roads, a port (Civitavecchia), an airport (Fiumicino), an intermodal terminal (Pomezia Santa Palomba)." These are goals also shared by the Lazio Region which, as stated by the Councilor for Mobility, Transport, Land Protection, Waste Cycle, State Property and Heritage, Fabrizio Ghera, "wants to be at the forefront in this sector and this is why the Region, together with Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato, is engaged in constant work to promote modal rebalancing, reducing the share of road transport and increasing rail service." From its point of view, the FS Group has aimed in its ten-year Industrial Plan to double the volume of goods transported by train by 2030, also thanks to the investment of 300 million euros for the strengthening of existing hubs or the creation of new intermodal hubs on the national territory. For this reason, in the last three years, Mercitalia Shunting, a company of Polo Logistica that owns the station, has invested five million and 300 thousand euros for the relaunch of the Lazio structure and also to increase its energy efficiency.
