Rail-road synergy for the transport of precast concrete elements

A new collaboration aimed at making logistics more efficient and environmentally sustainable: FS Polo Logistica, Baraclit, and Murano S.p.A. have announced the launch of an innovative intermodal transport model for precast concrete elements. The system optimizes logistics flows and reduces CO₂ emissions by cutting back on road freight.
The initiative was previewed today during the conference “The Role of Logistics in the Energy Transition and Economic Growth,” organized by ALIS (Association for Sustainable Intermodal Logistics) as part of the LetExpo trade fair in Verona.
Thanks to the FS Polo Logistica, the concrete elements produced by Baraclit at its Bibbiena (AR) plant are loaded directly onto trains at the factory via Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano (TFT). From there, a Mercitalia Rail train carries the materials to the Marcianise (CE) terminal, where Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal transfers them to trucks for delivery to the construction site.
This integrated logistics model highlights the synergy between the companies of the FS Polo Logistica, offering efficient and sustainable solutions that create value for all partners.
“This synergy is part of the ongoing development of our Strategic Plan, which includes a series of actions aimed at fostering maximum collaboration between different transport segments, with a system-wide approach to the entire supply chain and rail as the main long-distance carrier,” said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics.
“This approach stems, first and foremost, from the cultural innovation taking place within the FS Group's Polo Logistica: placing the customer and their needs at the heart of operations, making partnerships and synergies the cornerstone of the plan, and putting environmental, economic, and social sustainability at the forefront as we pursue ambitious goals. Our aim is to increasingly position ourselves as a Freight Forwarder supporting the European industrial system.”
By adopting this transport model, it is estimated that approximately 280 trucks will be removed from the road network, preventing around 195 tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared to an all-road solution, according to FS Polo Logistica estimates.
The initiative comes at a symbolic moment for Murano S.p.A., a leading Italian company in the dried fruit sector under the Fatina brand, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary by constructing a new, cutting-edge facility.
This plant—unparalleled in Europe in terms of size, technology, and innovation—has been entrusted to Baraclit, a Tuscan leader in the field of high-tech, design-focused precast construction.
The partnership represents another step forward in the intermodality journey promoted by the FS Polo Logistica, continuing the rail-sea-road project developed last year with Baraclit and the Grendi Group.
It marks another milestone toward increasingly sustainable, efficient logistics aligned with the ESG goals of all partner companies.
