Six new locomotives from CZ LOKO to strengthen rail freight transport

Greater operational capacity and increased flexibility for rail freight transport. FS Logistix, through Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, is purchasing six additional EffiShunter 1000 locomotives manufactured by CZ LOKO for freight services and shunting operations on non-electrified lines. The investment is part of the company’s Strategic Plan and further advances the renewal and strengthening of its fleet.

Versatile and designed to meet a wide range of operational requirements, the new locomotives will help improve service reliability and quality, with expected benefits in terms of fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs. This transaction represents the fourth order in ten years for this type of locomotive placed by companies of FS Logistix, confirming the well-established partnership with the Czech manufacturer.

“FS Logistix’s renewed trust represents for CZ LOKO an important recognition of the quality and reliability of our solutions”, said Josef Gulyas, CEO of CZ LOKO.

"This new order is part of the ongoing renewal and expansion of our fleet", said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix. "The goal is to make freight mobility increasingly efficient, reliable, and sustainable, leveraging economies of scale in rolling stock management and the quality of customer services."

"CZ LOKO locomotives guarantee high versatility and meet the operational needs of our services. The six new units will further improve the quality of our offer, with benefits in terms of fuel consumption and emissions", concluded Livio Ravera, CEO and General Manager of Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal.

Versatility and performance serving logistics

From shunting in terminals and ports to train recovery and transfer services, and even pulling heavy freight trains in double traction: the EffiShunter 1000 is designed to operate in a variety of contexts, meeting the needs of a complex logistics network. The 895 kW power output and maximum tractive effort of 267 kN combine performance, reliability and low operating costs, with reduced fuel consumption and noise levels.

The locomotives are authorized to run on the national railway network operated by RFI and on the main regional networks. Internationally, over 100 units of the model have been sold to date, operating in eight European countries.

A partnership established in 2017

The collaboration with CZ LOKO began in 2017, when Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal purchased the first five 744.1 locomotives, delivered the following year and currently used for shunting services in Ravenna, Padua, and Milan Smistamento. In 2021, five more 744.1 locomotives in Mercitalia Rail livery entered service, currently operating in Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, and Piedmont. In 2022, Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal acquired two additional 744.1 locomotives, also used for shunting services by Terminali Italia. Maintenance of the CZ LOKO locomotives operated by FS Logistix companies is provided by CZ LOKO Italia.
