Teralp Signs Contract for the Supply of 6 Electric Portal Cranes

  • Contract awarded to Austrian company Kuenz Gmbh
  • Destined for the new Milano Smistamento Intermodal Terminal

Rome, 2 August 2024 – A significant step forward for the development of the new Milano Smistamento Intermodal Terminal.

TerAlp, a company within the FS Group’s Polo Logistica, jointly owned by Mercitalia Logistics and Hupac, and the Austrian company Kuenz have today signed the contract for the supply, assembly, and commissioning of 6 electric portal cranes at the Milano Terminal.

The agreement was signed by Leonardo Rainiero, CEO of TerAlp, and David Moosbrugger, Managing Director of Kuenz Gmbh, in the presence of Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, Bernhard Kunz, President of TerAlp and Hupac Board Member, Günter Bischof, CEO of Kuenz Gmbh, and Matteo Tosi, CEO of Kuenz Italia srl.

The contract is worth approximately €31 million and represents one of the largest single orders for intermodal cranes in Europe.

“Terminals represent a key asset for the development of logistics in Italy and Europe. They are the essential link to foster intermodality and provide increasingly efficient and sustainable solutions for integrating freight transport,” said Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. “As the Polo Logistica, we are investing over €350 million in terminal development, and today we are taking another concrete step forward in implementing our investment plan. The Milano terminal will be a strategic hub to strengthen connections with the European TEN-T network, supporting local economies.”

Bernhard Kunz emphasized, “This investment in intermodal terminals is essential to achieve the road-to-rail transfer targets set by Swiss policy.”

Kuenz adds, “We are proud that TerAlp has chosen Kuenz as the partner for Milano Smistamento. As a market leader in intermodal container cranes in Europe, we will use all our experience to bring a superior and environmentally friendly product to the new terminal,” said Günter Bischof. “The cranes will be equipped with the most advanced technology, ensuring high productivity and reliability, as well as low operational and maintenance costs,” added David Moosbrugger.

The Milano Smistamento terminal in Segrate, currently under construction, will cover an area of approximately 240,000 square meters and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to meet the highest safety and efficiency standards, crucial for the sustainable development of freight transport between Italy and Europe, particularly with Switzerland.

The terminal’s development will involve an investment of approximately €115 million, with funding from the Swiss Government, and phased activation is scheduled for 2026. Once fully operational, it will have a maximum capacity of 22 train pairs per day and will be able to handle approximately 395,000 UTI per year.

The works are being carried out by TerAlp, a company dedicated to equipping the country’s most productive economic areas with technologically advanced and environmentally friendly terminals, starting with Milan and Brescia, which will allow for optimal management of traffic increases through Switzerland generated by the opening of the Gotthard and Ceneri rail tunnels.

This project is part of the Polo Logistica’s investment plan, which involves the development of new technologically advanced Intermodal Terminals capable of meeting future transport demand in the most effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly way.
